Top 5 best national costumes from Mexicana Universal 2023

Yesterday, August 26, 2023, the competition of national costumes of one of the most popular and beloved beauty pageants in America took place: Mexicana Universal 2023, from which 20 original designs were presented to the public, but just one of them won the first position and will show part of Mexican culture to the universe, next November 12, in El Salvador.

Next is my top five of the best costumes, although there were many that caught my attention due to their quality and originality. The ones that I show you below have all the elements to shine on any international stage and leave many speechless with their beauty, color, quality and creativity. Let's see which were the best:

5. The talented Isadora Balmaceda Sánchez presented her costume called "Catrina". This outfit mixes traditional and modern elements that create and update the appearance of one of the most important traditions for Mexicans: the celebration of the Day of the Dead.

I loved the silhouette of this design, the manufacturing technique, which is meticulously and precisely handmade. Visually, it fills the stage and immediately transports us to the culture of Mexico.

4. This beautiful national costume, called "Cauyumari", was made by Iván and María Fernanda Rodríguez. Both artists were inspired by the legend of the blue deer, one of the most sacred figures for the Huicholes (an ethnic group of the country).

According to this legend, it was a deer that led the Huicholes to the sacred land of Wirikuta, where they first encountered peyote or hikuri, to finally found an important point of spiritual connection.

This costume reflects the history of Mexico, it is hand painted, it is well-made, and personally I find it quite elegant. I must emphasize that although I place it in fifth position, the official organization of the contest awarded it third place in the competition.

3. "Donaji, Purity of a Sacrifice" is the name of the national costume that ranks third on my list of the best costumes from this competition. It was made by Manuel Medina. It is inspired by the story of the indigenous-zapotec princess Donaji, who in times of war sacrificed herself to protect her people, thus demonstrating her loyalty and unconditional love towards those who were under her responsibility. The plume is covered with the flower that represents the princess, and it is currently present in the coat of arms of the city of Oaxaca.

2. Laura Ruiz made this magnificent costume called "Calavera Garbancera". It is a design inspired by the tradition of the Day of the Dead and the traditional Catrina (another name by which the Garbancera Skull is also known). According to Laura, this costume wishes to honor the women who have lost their lives in Mexico, but who continue in the hearts of those who remember them.

Personally, I was very shocked to see this costume on stage. The combination of colors, dimensions and design of each element is perfect and transports whoever sees it to a magical world, full of fantasies. It seems to me a costume that, in addition to standing out for its originality, also fulfills the highlight of the woman's silhouette. I place it in second place and let me tell you that the Mexicana organization did the same, because we cannot deny that it is beautiful, right?

1. The winning costume of my top, which is also the Mexicana organization's number one, is called "Guardiana Alebrije". It was made by Ángel Ramos, who said that the first time he participated in this type of competition was ten years ago, on this occasion he proposed not only to participate, but also to win. And you did it, Angel! Your costume is beautiful!

Guardiana Alebrije, according to its own creator, is responsible for guarding the belief in the magical beings, such as the fusion of an owl and a deer, both animals are of Zapotec symbology and are important, as they represent wisdom and focus.

It seems to me that this colorful and beautiful costume will not go unnoticed on the stage of Miss Universe 2023. I am sure that it will be on the list of the best ones, because in addition to its excellent quality in design, materials and tailoring, It is a very original costume and almost impossible to stop looking and admiring. I must clarify that the organization of the event, directed by miss universe 1990, Lupita Jones, only chose a top three: third place went to Cauyumari (located in fourth position in my top), Calavera Guabancera in second place and Guardiana Alebrije in the first place.

The Miss Mexico organization and its fans celebrate the election of two beautiful national queens who will participate in two world-class beauty pageants. Yesterday, the country of Tacos and Tequila elected the spectacular Alejandra Díaz de León as Miss Mexico 2023 and the stunning Vanessa López as Miss Supranational Mexico 2023.

Both young women were part of a select group of 32 candidates who competed for several weeks to prove that they were the ones to win and shout the name of their country internationally.

Let's meet the queens!

Alejandra Díaz de León will be responsible for representing Mexico in the Miss World 2023 contest to be held in the United Arab Emirates in December. She is originally from San Luis Potosí, she is 22 years old and also ranked second in "Beauty with a Purpose", a competition that is part of the Miss World format, and that encourages young women to carry out a social project where their voices are leaders and your actions are an example. The beauty has a Spanish-American Language and Literature degree with a Classic and Contemporary Letters diploma.

Vanessa López is originally from Sonora and today she proudly wears the crown of Miss Supranational Mexico 2023, she will be the one to represent the Mexicans in Miss Supranational to be held in Poland. This beautiful young woman speaks English, is a professional actress and model, and studies communication and digital media. Vanesa also promoted a "Mind Over Body" social campaign focused on promoting women's mental health.

About the event

Miss Mexico 2023 was held at the Morelos Theater in the host city, Morelia. The direction was in charge of Joana Gutiérrez and Alejandro García, who did, in my opinion, a good job. Two groups of finalists were selected, one to find the one indicated for Miss World and another to reward the best one, heading for Miss Supranational.

The top of Miss Mexico heading to Miss World included 16 beautiful young women: Miss Guanajuato, Janetzy Cuevas; Miss Chihuahua, Celeste Espinoza; Miss Guerrero, Diana Marin; Miss Tamaulipas, Michelle Kersaint; Miss Tlaxcala, Liliana Silva and Miss Michoacán, Alondra Cortés. This group would be joined by five candidates who were also part of the top 10: Miss Mexico City, Miranda Huerta; Miss Chiapas, Daniela Nucamendi; Miss Morelos, Grace Miranda; Miss Tabasco, Emmanuelle Guzmán and Miss Quintana Roo, Scarlet Leines.

While Miss Nayarit, Mónica Carillo, who would occupy a fourth place at the end of the evening, managed to enter the top 5; Miss Yucatán, Emmy Puerto, who was named third runner-up; Miss Sinaloa, Karla Rivas, named second runner-up; Miss Colima, Sofía Zamora, who was the first runner-up and will be responsible for occupying the position of Alejandra, the one selected as queen, in case the latter cannot fulfill her duties.

The top of Miss Supranational Mexico was 10 candidates: Miss Mexico State, Sofía Cancino; Miss Jalisco, Valeria Martinez; Miss Baja California, Valeria Guajardo; Miss Sinaloa, Karla Rivas and Miss Guerrero, Diana Marín. The following misses who were also top would be added to those mentioned: Coahuila, Sofía de Anda, called to occupy fourth place in the competition; Tamaulipas-Michelle Kersaint, who would be the third finalist; Miss Chiapas, Daniela Nucamendi, named as a second finalist and Miss Nayarit, Mónica Carrillo, who was holding hands with Vanessa López, the one chosen as Miss Supranational Mexico 2023.

Other awards given during the evening were Miss Congeniality won by Amanda Ocampo, Miss Zacatecas, and Miss Photogenic Fernanda Cantú, Miss Puebla.
